Ichi-go Ichi-e: A Lesson in Presence
While watching a recent episode of "Somebody Feed Phil" on Netflix, an extremely simple yet impactful Japanese concept called Ichi-go Ichi-e, which means “one time, one meeting.” Introduced by a guest during a dinner, it means that this moment in time will never repeat.
Ichi-go Ichi-e is about cherishing every encounter, understanding that each moment is unique and won't recur in the same way again. It’s a reminder to stay present, to fully engage with whom we're with and what we're doing. In today’s social media focused culture, it’s easy to overlook the importance of the present, always looking to the next item on our agenda or scrolling through our phones.
Imagine the depth of connection and the authenticity of experience we could achieve if we take this concept into every interaction throughout our day. This philosophy doesn't just enhance personal interactions, it is about making every moment count, fostering a deeper appreciation for the now. This is a skill that is essential in every aspect of life.
As we go forward, let’s challenge ourselves to practice Ichi-go Ichi-e. Whether it’s dinner with friends, conversation with our children, a meeting, or a yoga class, remember that this moment is once in a lifetime. By embracing this mindset, each day becomes more meaningful, and remarkably, more productive.
This simple concept, encountered unexpectedly in a TV show, has encouraged me to reevaluate how presence can be elevated in my practice, ensuring that both I and those I work with truly benefit from every shared second.
